Rundown Homes

You always want to keep an eye out for rundown homes in the neighborhood when you are buying a house.  You may have found the gem of the neighborhood, but if all the other homes are rundown, then that could affect property values.  You might enjoy getting a nice home for a great price, but rundown houses could be indicators of other, more serious problems.  You want to know about those problems before you think about signing any papers.

New Paint Jobs On Only Some Walls

The next warning sign is when you see that the sellers have only painted some walls but not all.  Or maybe they have painted a single wall while leaving all the others noticeably untouched.  This merits a closer look because this tactic of painting one wall can be done to cover up water damage, or mold and mildew.  Look for this phenomenon on the ceilings, as well.  If you aren't sure why a seller did this, then be sure that you have a home inspector tell you what is going on, and if it is anything that you need to worry about.

Rooms That Are Off Limits

Buying a house means buying all the rooms in the house, so you want to see all of them before you commit to the purchase.  When you see that some rooms or areas are off limits to you when you go to see the house, this should set off alarms in your head.  It is possible that the current owners are just trying to hide some clutter or that they have something that might make you reconsider a decision to buy the home.  Whatever the reason, you want to make your way into all the rooms and other areas of the house before you think about submitting any offers.
